Bordenave’s French Bakery celebrates 100 years of making sourdough in San Rafael. June 5, 2018


Bordenave's is a wholesale bakery located in San Rafael, California. We supply fresh-baked bread daily to many of the finest restaurants, delis, and specialty grocery stores all over the Bay Area. We have done so for over a century.

We insist on not using any modern dough conditioners, chemicals, additives, nor preservatives of any kind. At Bordenave's we pride ourselves on the freshness and quality of all our products. We offer a wide selection of breads that vary in style, taste, grain, and texture.

Every employee strives to achieve and maintain continued customer satisfaction. The close relationships we have developed with our customers is proof of our success. We have a large, devoted clientele to showcase our great tasting breads. Bordenave's has earned a reputation for extraordinary quality and creativity while maintaining reasonable prices.


Bordenave's began in 1918 when Frank Bordenave arrived in our United States from France, where he worked as a baker. Frank opened a bakery named the Parisian on B Street in San Rafael. In 1928, when this picture was taken, Frank moved his bakery to 1553 4th Street. Not far from where Bordenave's bakes today, 1512 4th Street.

It was during the Great Depression when Frank decided to shift his focus from baking cakes and pastries to specializing in baking quality bread products. His bread was so delicious, it soon became his main product. He used his artistic ability as a pastry chef and began to create an extensive variety of different breads. Since his passing, this collection has continued to grow exponentially until it has reached what is found in Bordenave's today.
